Ways to Say Sorry

We’ve all been there—in a thoughtless moment, you’ve said or done something to hurt the one you love. Now you’re left feeling terrible, searching for ways to say sorry that can make up for the damage you’ve done to your treasured relationship. Luckily, there are many ways to say sorry that can get you out of the doghouse and back into your loved one’s good graces.

Ways to Say Sorry

Say it with a gift
Of all the ways to say sorry, gift-giving is perhaps the most popular. You don’t always have to spend a lot of money—whether it’s an expensive piece of jewelry or something homemade, the important thing is to let them know that you took the time to find something special just for them.

Has your boyfriend been talking about an awesome new video game he’s dying to try? Did your best friend mention that lilies are her favorite flower? If so, these are great ways to say sorry; you know they’ll love the gift, and it shows that you’ve been paying attention to what they like.

But remember: even if you buy the most extravagant gift in the world, you still need to say the words “I’m sorry.” Gifts are wonderful ways to say sorry, but they’re no replacement for telling your loved one that you understand what you did wrong and will try not to do it again.

Say it with a poem
Poems are also great ways to say sorry.  If you’re apologizing to a boyfriend or girlfriend, try looking through a book of love poems to find one that expresses your emotions. Or, if there’s a song that is special to the two of you, find a particularly meaningful verse and write it in a card. Song lyrics are really just poems set to music.

If you’re looking for ways to say sorry to a friend, coworker or family member, a mushy poem or love song might not be a good idea. Why not write a lighthearted poem of your own? Using humor in an apology is a great idea, as long as you just made a small mistake that you think your friend is likely to forgive. The fact that they takes time to create and comes from the heart makes poetry one of the best ways to say sorry.

A few months ago I forgot to show up for a shopping trip my friend and I had planned. I thought of all the ways to say sorry and decided to write her a silly poem. Here’s what I wrote:

“Let’s go shopping on Friday!” you said,
and I agreed, without any hesitation.

I needed new shoes and you needed a purse:
The mall was our destination.

Then Friday came and Friday went,
and I sat at home like a dolt.

Until Saturday morning when I got out of bed
and remembered with a jolt!

I can’t believe I didn’t show up;
I’m feeling so sad and blue.

The worst part is I missed my chance
to spend some time with you!

Say it with your time
One of the best ways to say sorry is spending time with the person you’ve hurt. Did you blow off plans to go see a movie with your boyfriend? Maybe you could make it up to him by planning a movie night at home and making all of his favorite snacks.

When people are angry or upset, it’s often because their feelings are hurt. So even though your friend or significant other might seem mad, they might just be sad because they feel like they aren’t important to you. Spending time with your loved one is one of the best ways to say sorry because it shows that you’re willing to make them your top priority.

We all try really hard not to hurt the people we love—but nobody’s perfect. The good news is that most people are willing to forgive when they receive a sincere apology. So if you’ve hurt someone, don’t panic—just consider the many ways to say sorry and choose one that’s right for your situation.
